Cath’s Food Story: Where It All Began
Cath grew up in outer Melbourne as one of ten children in a lively, love-filled household. Weekends often meant a few extra faces at the table, with friends dropping by and her mum never missing a beat—always welcoming, adaptable, and ready to make room for one (or two, or three) more.
The family created countless beautiful memories together, many of them centered around food. One that remains vivid in Cath’s mind more than 40 years later is a family holiday to Apollo Bay. Her mum’s lovingly cooked corned beef—wrapped in a tablecloth and served fresh at Paradise Picnic Reserve—stands out as one of her most treasured food memories.
There were also plenty of kitchen misadventures, like the accidental “apple glurg,” a dessert gone wrong but never forgotten. And then there were the comforting, budget-friendly classics—golden syrup dumplings and bread and butter pudding—that always hit the spot. In Cath’s family, food was simple but always rich in flavour, love, and togetherness.
The love of food runs strong through the whole family, with each sibling bringing their own unique flair to the table:
- Michele, the eldest sister, is an incredible cook known for her relishes and flavour-packed side dishes.
- Liz, who lives in the U.K., is the queen of shared dinners—her Beef Wellington is legendary.
- Suz is the platter queen, renowned for her stunning and delicious grazing boards.
- Stephen brings a touch of French flair to his cooking, effortlessly elevating the classics.
- Pete, who trained as a chef, is not only a brilliant cook but also Cath’s biggest supporter and mentor. He helped her prepare for both of her MasterChef journeys, and the two share a deep bond over time spent in the kitchen together.
There are now a few Vegans and vegetarians in the mix of the grandchildren which challenges everyone to think and cook differently. Cath grew up in a traditional meat and three vegie family so Cath’s cooking is forever evolving
The Next Generation
The food love continues with Cath’s children:
- Alexandra is a creative, instinctual cook who loves to cook “off-script”—no recipes needed, just whatever’s in the fridge.
- Abby is the baker and pasta maker. She’s precise, passionate, and finds joy in kneading dough and perfecting pastry.
Cath’s husband Brad, the best kind of taste-tester—who just loves eating whatever comes out of Cath’s Kitchen!
Cath From MasterChef | The MasterChef Experience
Often affectionately called “Cath from MasterChef,” Cath describes her MasterChef journey as nothing short of the adventure of a lifetime. It was a bold and beautiful gift she gave herself—after years of raising her two incredible children, Alexandra and Abby. Knowing that they are proud of her journey fills Cath’s heart in a way words can’t quite express.
MasterChef was a rollercoaster—thrilling, stressful, and completely life-changing. There were moments of doubt and fear, especially around the vulnerability that comes with being on national television. But over time, Cath came to see that vulnerability as one of her greatest strengths. Wearing her heart on her sleeve allowed her to grow, to connect, and to truly discover herself. It reminded her that showing up as your authentic self is one of the most powerful things you can do.
Throughout the experience, Cath was supported by an outpouring of love from family and friends. Daily messages, small pep talks, and unwavering belief lifted her every step of the way. And then there was her MasterChef family—an extraordinary group of people who truly understand the joy, chaos, and emotion of that kitchen. Today, she feels lucky to have two families—both deeply cherished.
Some of the most meaningful moments weren’t the loudest—they were the quiet ones. Personal conversations with the judges, unexpected encouragement, and feedback that deeply moved her. Cath holds those memories close and uses them as fuel to keep chasing her food dreams.
In 2025, Cath returned to the kitchen for MasterChef: Back to Win (Season 17), bringing with her everything she’d learned—not just in the kitchen, but in life. The second time around, she felt braver, more grounded, and more determined than ever to cook with purpose and joy.
She’s incredibly proud of what she achieved on MasterChef—not just the dishes, but the personal growth, the courage, and the connection it brought. By sharing her journey, Cath hopes to inspire other women—especially those in midlife—to know that it’s never too late to chase a dream, take a bold step, and believe in their worth.
The magic of MasterChef will remain with Cath forever.
